Small, efficient, agile and alert. Your role is that of a messenger, but your weak appearance and odd behaviour make you rather attractive as prey.
The Machine is equipped with iterator-like antennae that provide them with heightened senses and spikes along their back that offer some protection from predators.
Machine is unlocked as a playable character after completing both Gourmand's and Spearmaster's campaigns.

2 food pips are required to hibernate, and none can be stored for the next cycle.
The Machine starts the game in Outer Expanse with a Red Overseer briefly following them, which explodes after a few seconds. Machine also begins with the Mark of Communication.
Area: Outer Expanse (OE_JUNGLE01)
Inventory:
- A Spear in hand.
- Machine freezes over time. Warmth can be retained by maintaining proximity to warm creatures or objects, holding or swallowing warm objects such as Lanterns, and being indoors. When freezing, Machine moves slower and may fall over or drop objects.
- Almost any dead creature can be eaten for food, except Lizards, which give no food pips and briefly stun Machine.
- Machine enters an exhausted state after excessive jumping or sliding, or after throwing two Spears in quick succession.
- Most non-lethal attacks leave Machine weakened, afflicting them with an extended exhaustion debuff.
- Spear damage is increased.
- Staked Spears can be pulled from walls.
- Creatures have a small chance to stun upon contact with Machine's spikes, equivalent to stunning with a Rock.
- Machine's campaign takes place between Monk's and Rivulet's.
- The water in Garbage Wastes and Shoreline is now blue.
- The plants and structures in Farm Arrays now have a yellowish tone, as opposed to the normal red.
- Five Pebbles' superstructure is now The Rot.
- Dark areas are a little brighter.
- Sound from all creatures is louder and can be heard from significantly further away.
- Predators are more common and more difficult.
- Karma Flowers do not appear.
- Echoes do not appear.
- Explosive Spears can rarely replace normal Spears (1/125 chance).
- Red Overseers do not appear, except at the very start.
Machine has difficulty moving and is slower when below 1 pip of warmth. They may fall over while walking or climbing, and often drops held objects.
Machine can store a Spear on their back, allowing them to carry 2 Spears at once. Holding with a Spear in the main hand (Slugcat's right) or while holding nothing else places the Spear on Machine's back, and holding again with an empty hand takes it back off. A Spear on Machine's back can be placed on the ground by holding and while empty-handed. If already holding a Spear, picking up another sends it straight to their back.
Machine is much lighter than any other Slugcat. Their low mass allows them to fly indefinitely with a Squidcada by backflipping while holding them. Low mass also makes them particularly vulnerable to Worm Grass, and they struggle to carry creatures such as Jetfish.

- They are often depicted with a friendly Green Lizard and an indifferent White Lizard. These are alternate universe versions of Zeal's companions, Ringo and Selwyn, respectively.
